Principal’s Corner- April

April 19, 2008

Ms. Nasser, PrincipalApril 18, 2008

Dear Staff Members:

There are many wonderful things that have been going on for the past 2 to 3 weeks. Some of the highlights are:

1) Ms. LaBua and her students went on their field trip to Washington, D.C. last weekend. The trip was a great success. It is not easy for a first year teacher to take on such an event, but with support of the Truman staff and Ms. LaBua’s dedication to our students, the trip was a memorable one for them.

2) The Robotics team under the direction of Ms. Jacobson are in Atlanta now for their final competition. The funds to sponsor the trip was raised by the generous donations of two of our partners (Charlie Bendit and Paul Neuman) and Center for Education Innovation Organization (CEI). We’ll share the ranking of our team once we return from vacation.

3) The Chancellor Press Office is looking to include one of our students as a panelist on the NY 1 Inside City Hall Program to discuss the Presidential Election. Again, once the decision is made as to who will represent Truman and the taping is made, I will share that with you.

4) On Tuesday, April 15th, at the PENCIL Gala, three schools were featured from the entire city, one on each level, and Truman was the High School selected to feature our students and staff. This event was attended by the Chancellor, many CEO’s and some Hollywood stars.

5) If you have Channel 12 in your homes, you should be able to see that Truman High School is featured continuously. We are trying very hard to get the word out about our wonderful school and staff so that we can attract better prepared students.

6) The President of FX Fox who is an alumnus of Truman High School, visited Truman and ran a law class two weeks ago. He is helping us to bring attention to our dormant pool by having the local Fox News feature a segment to attract possible monetary donors so that we can get our pool up and running again.

7) The Law Teachers and Mr. DeSantis are writing a VATEA Grant so that our Law Program can be State Certified. We will update you in June on the status of this grant.

8) Ms. Daniele from the English Department is looking for news to post on the website. Please give any information that you want posted on the site to your department liaison so that he/she may pass it on to Ms. Daniele.

9) The Girls’ Soccer Team from the spring sports remain to be undefeated so please congratulate the girls if you have any of them in your classes.

10) David Martin and his wife had a baby girl this week. Congratulations to them both.

11) One of the local gas stations donated $500 to the school and offered us on May 17th to use their lot for car wash to fundraise for our school. If any of the coaches are interested, please contact Mr. DeSantis.

12) Our Family Day will be on May 17th. Please reach out to Rachel Miller and/or Mr. Barakat if you would like to get involved in the planning of this wonderful event.

13) Yesterday, our seniors had their recital and they were all magnificent. The culinary students prepared and served wonderful hors d’oeuvres. Many thanks to Mr. Bradley, Ms. Mills, Mr. Barakat, Mr. Chase, and Mr. Brylski. A thank you also goes to Ms. Alfano and Ms. Pozzuto for attending the event and supporting our students.

I wish all of you a very happy holiday and a restful vacation. I’ll see all of you on Monday, April 28th.

Sana Nasser

Dear Staff Members:

In an effort to coordinate student activities, I am requesting that the planning of assemblies, fundraising activities, trips, press releases with local newspapers, etc. be discussed with Mr. Barakat (AP Student Activities). Mr. Barakat will then make sure that events are not in conflict with one another, building permits are filed, security agents are available, facilities (Auditorium, Planetarium, Library) are available and placed on my calendar. Mr. Barakat will then post all events on one central calendar that will be available for viewing by all staff members and posted on our website as well.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Ms. Nasser
