International Food Festival

January 11, 2008

On December 18th, The National Honor Society hosted an International Food Festival. The NHS is a group of twenty-two Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors who have shown excellence in scholarship, leadership, service and character.

“We did it as a way to raise funds for NHS, but also to do something for the community” said Peace Young, National Honor Society president and senior at Truman. “Service is one of the things that NHS is all about. Because the Bronx and Truman has so much diversity, we thought the International Food Festival would be a good way to celebrate the community.”

The evening opened with a ceremonial presentation of the flag of each country represented and opening remarks from Principal, Sana Q.Nasser, NHS director Claudia Williams and NHS president, Peace Young.

As the crowed dined on food from over 10 different countries, they enjoyed a plethora of multicultural entertainment. Music from all over the world played as members of Truman High’s Multicultural Club performed dances such as Merengue, Bachata and Salsa and wore traditional costumes, Diablos Consuelo, from the Dominican Republic. A slide show with information about each country, culture and food played continuously during the festival.

“The International Food Night held on December 18, 2007 was an overwhelming success” said Principal Sana Q. Nasser about the event. “Students, parents and staff came together to celebrate not only a variety of delicious foods from various countries, but also to experience the different languages, costumes and customs. The evening was not only an entertaining event but an educational experience as well.”
