BRONX, NY – Students entering Truman High School have a reason to smile this year – as one faculty member is finding a new way to brighten their day.

“It’s a mood elevator without question,” says English teacher Reggie Lewis.  “Even if some just love the artwork of it.”

Mr. Lewis, who helps each morning during student entry – has started creating welcome signs that he holds up each morning as students pass by.  They usually involve a humorous message- and remind students to remove their hats or other head-gear.

“I’m just trying to ease up the tension so the day can be easier for everyone,” Lewis says.  Students passing by were seen repeatedly breaking out with a grin or a happy greeting after seeing the signs.

The signs often include a comical illustration and often-rhyming phrase reminding students to have a good day and remove their hats. It’s a small gesture, but one that puts students in a positive mindset – right when they step inside the door.

“It’s just to make people feel better,” Lewis says.  It seems to be working.
