Truman H.S. has been designated, for a sixth consecutive year, a 2014-2015 No Place For Hate® (NPFH) school by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). We received this honor for the work we do to promote respect and understanding on the Truman campus.

From campus wide awareness campaigns like Spirit Day, One Billion Rising, International Anti-Street Harassment week, the National Day of Silence, and Denim Day, to anti-bullying, anti-bias and diversity education in the classroom, we have worked to create a culture of respect in our school community.

During the recognition ceremony, the ADL also honored Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, better known as Lady GaGa, with the “Making A Difference” award for her Born This Way foundation. “Youth for me represent a kinder and braver world because their stories have the ability to change things.  It takes just one story to inspire someone to be nicer in class. It takes just one story to inspire someone who wants to give up. It takes just one story to change somebody’s life,” Lady Gaga said in her video message that was seen by more than one million students involved in ADL’s No Place for Hate program nationwide. No Place For Hate® is an ADL initiative that offers students, teachers, administrators and family members the opportunity to work together to enhance a culture of respect in the school community. Participating schools completed various activities and projects to promote unity and reduce bullying, name-calling and other expressions of bias.

“The fight against bullying and hate begins with one student, one teacher, one principal or one school, who speak out and stand together to promote respect and unity,” said Ron Meier, ADL New York Regional Director.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
