MANHATTAN, NY – In it’s very first year in print, the “Truman Times” student newspaper is already being recognized for excellence.  Thursday, student staffers accepted the “Runner Up” (Second Place) award in the “Best New Newspaper” (under 2 years old) category.  The category had fifteen entries from area schools.

The award was presented by Katina Paron at the 2016 Baruch College High School Journalism Conference.  Schools from across New York City attended the event, which also included two dozen interactive workshops from journalism industry experts.

The event kicked off with a keynote address by S. Mitra Kalita of CNN Digital, who spoke about the importance of diversity in newsrooms.  A lunch time press conference allowed students to ask questions of Sree Sreenivasan, the recently-hired New York City Chief Digital Officer.

The Truman Times newspaper that garnered the prize was advised by Ms. Ranisha Singh.  The current advisor of the Truman Times is Mr. Eddie Cassidy.
