Students Get “Reel” With Their Dreams

Freshman Cordell Charles gets tips on how to run an ENG camera from WABC’s Todd Pierce while reporter Josh Einiger explains live reporting.

NEW YORK, NY- Dream big, work hard, and don’t let life’s circumstances prevent you from reaching your goals. Those were the main themes at this year’s Get Reel With Your Dreams program, hosted by the Walt Disney Company.

WABC Sportscaster Ryan Field congratulates John Rivera on his play-by-play work.

“Certain workshops opened my mind to what the real world will be like,” said Lester Robinson Jr., a senior and first-time Get Reel participant. “Hearing it from people who went through it themselves really inspired me to think bigger.”

Thirty-five media students participated in the workshop event at the New York headquarters of ABC television on Columbus Avenue. They met and interacted with over a dozen media industry professionals including several on-air personalities from ABC 7 Eyewitness news and behind-the-scenes executives from ABC and Disney.  This was Truman’s seventh year participating in the event.

“I have to say this year was the best,” according to Media teacher Dave Roush. “They really took the interactivity and engagement in the workshops to the next level. It was so fun to watch.”

Now, host and founder Sade Baderinwa has invited the students to produce a 30 second public service announcement, which will be judged in a scholarship competition. This year, $50,000 in awards will be given out.  Truman students won scholarships in four of the past six years they competed.

An award ceremony date has not been announced.
