School Rules
Which Items Are Not Allowed In School?
The following list contains the items that you are not permitted to bring into school:
- Electronic Devices such as cell phones, I-Pods, MP3 players, CD Players, PSPs, Game Boys, Headphones, and Cameras
- Head Gear of any kind including any item of clothing that a student can wear on his or her head
- Beads, Flags, and Chains, weapons of any kind
- Glass bottles of any kind
If you are in possession of any of the above items in school, they will be immediately confiscated.
How can I have my confiscated items returned?
Any item that has been confiscated can be returned only to a parent or guardian on Wednesdays, between the hours of 3:00pm and 5:00pm in room 168. Beads and weapons of any kind will not be returned.
Why do I need to show my ID when asked?
Students must present their identification cards when requested by a school official. Students who refuse to present their identification are violating the citywide discipline code and are subject to disciplinary action.
What will happen if I cut a class?
Cutting class is defined in the following ways:
- Found in the hallway or stairway after the late bell without a pass
- Attending third period, but being marked absent for other periods
- Arriving to class late as indicated on the late log
Each week, the Office of Safety and Security will examine and review the cutting sheets from the attendance office and the late logs of every classroom. Every student that meets one or more of the above criteria will be subject to disciplinary action.
What will happen if I wear headgear to school?
Headgear is defined as a hat, scarf, do rag, headband, bandana, hood, and any other object used to cover the head or hair of an individual. Students are not allowed to wear headgear in the building. All headgear will be confiscated at entry.
What is a principal’s suspension?
Students who receive a principal’s suspensions must report to school at 2:00 PM in Room 144 to make up class work missed during the instructional day. Students are dismissed at 4:00 PM. Additional infractions that may result in detention or a principal’s suspension are:
What are the procedures for a fire drill?
Fire drills are required by law and will be conducted several times a year. These drills are taken very seriously at Truman High School and every classroom will have the rules and procedures listed. It is very important that all students follow the procedures that the school has created during emergency situations. During a fire drill you will hear three long gongs, followed by three more long gongs and so on. When you hear these sounds, it is imperative that you follow the instructions from your teacher and do the following:
- Leave notebooks and other school materials at your desk.
- Quietly line up with your teacher.
- Quietly follow your teacher to the designated exit.
- Stay with your class and teacher during the fire drill.
- Follow all instructions that are provided by your teacher and school officials.
What is the Discipline Code?
Truman High School is a New York City Public School and is obligated to follow all rules and regulations that are laid out by the Chancellor. Every student is provided with a Discipline Handbook at the beginning of the year. You can also see the discipline code online at the following web address:
