Image # 1. Where can I make a phone call?

Students who need to make a phone call may do so only in the case of an emergency in room 258. You must obtain a pass from your teacher in order to do so.

 

How do I get a Metro Card or replace one?

New York City administrative offices determine which students are entitled to metro cards. Depending upon where you live, you may receive either a full-fare, half-fare or you may not be eligible for a metro card at all. Metro cards are given out at the beginning of the year during your 3rd period class. If you lose your Metro card, you must see Ms. Stream in room 158 during your lunch period or at the end of your school day. If you lose your card, you must notify Ms. Stream in room 158. Your card will be replaced and the old one will be canceled.

How do I get an ID card?

All ninth graders will be provided with a school ID card. At the beginning of your ninth grade year, your picture will be taken during your English class. Cards will then be made and distributed during your English class. If you lose your ID card, you must immediately order one at student entry. You must carry your Truman ID card at all times. It must be presented upon entry to the building, whenever a staff member or school safety asks you to identify yourself and for admission to the cafeteria, locker rooms and library.

 

What is a Program Card and how do I replace one?

Your program card is given to you at the beginning of the year. It lists the names, times, and locations of all of your classes. You will need your program card as proof of identification until you receive your ID card. In addition, your teachers will ask to see it when you begin a new semester. If you lose your program card, you must go to room 263 for a replacement.

What is a transcript and how do I get one?

Your transcript is a very important document that lists the credits you have earned and the classes you have taken. Transcripts are given out in October and May during third period classes. Students are urged to carefully study their transcripts to make sure that all information is correct. If you feel that something is incorrect, immediately contact your guidance counselor.

 

Where do I eat lunch?

Every ninth grade student is given a period devoted to lunch. Lunch can be purchased in the student cafeteria which is located in room 155. Students who wish to bring food must only bring sandwiches, unopened juices, fruits and/or vegetables. All students are entitled to free breakfast. Breakfast is offered to students upon entry to the building.

How do I know if I am entitled to free or reduced school meals?

All students must fill out a lunch application regardless of whether they think that they are entitled to free lunch. Once the school receives the information, your eligibility will be reflected when you swipe your ID card. However, no child is ever denied lunch. Until the forms are processed, every student can receive a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a cheese sandwich for free.

 

Where is the library and what are the procedures for visiting it?

Image # 2. The library is located on the first floor in room 140. It is a place for research and reading. Students may visit the library during their lunch period. In order to visit the library, you must bring a note from a teacher in the lunchroom as well as your ID and Program Card. The library is open to students during the following days and times:

  • Monday Periods 4,5,6,7,8  
  • Tuesday Periods 4,5,6,7,8,9  
  • Wednesday Periods 4,5,6,7,8,9  
  • Thursday Periods 4,5,6,7,8,9  
  • Friday Periods 4,5,6,7,8

* Please note that all Truman rules apply within the library, however, there are some additional rules that must be followed as well:

  • No eating, drinking, or candy
  • Materials must be returned before the due date
  • Reference materials cannot be checked out
  • Students must obtain permission from the librarian in order to use a computer
  • Computers may only be used for educational purposes
  • Students must submit a parental permission slip in order to use library computers

 

Do I have a homeroom?

Every student is assigned a homeroom based upon their grade level. The grade level you are assigned is determined by the number of credits you have earned. Therefore, it is possible that a student remain in the 9th grade if he/she does not accumulate the minimum amount of credits (11) necessary to be promoted. In addition, ninth grade students who are enrolled in one of our theme-based houses will have a homeroom that reflects that particular house. Here is a breakdown of homeroom by grades:

Do I meet with my homeroom?

Unlike middle school, students at Truman do not meet with their homeroom daily. Instead, all important information is disseminated during 3rd period classes. The 3rd period is extended for this purpose.  

What do I wear for physical education class?

All students must wear a physical education uniform that consists of a Truman shirt and shorts of your choosing. In addition, all students must purchase a lock for their physical education lockers. Locks and shirts can be purchased in the school store which is located in room G-87.

 

Who are the Assistant Principals and what do they do?

Where is the Lost and Found?

If you lose any of your belongings, you should notify a teacher. In addition, you can check with staff members in the main office (room 258) as well as room 168 to see if anyone found what you lost.

Where are the bathrooms and what are the procedures for using them?

Image # 3. Student bathrooms are located on the North side of the first floor and the South side of the fifth floor. Students who wish to use the bathroom must ask their teacher for a pass. Bathroom passes are not given out during the first ten minutes of class or the last ten minutes of class.

What is Open School Night/Afternoon?

Truman High School holds Open School Night and Open School Afternoon twice a year; once in the fall and again in the spring. Open School is a chance for your parents to meet with your teachers and discuss your progress. Open School Evening is usually held on a Thursday evening in October and March and Open School afternoon is usually held on a Friday afternoon in October and March. Your parents or guardians have several hours to meet with all of the teachers that you meet with throughout the day. It is a good idea to provide them with a copy of your program so that they can see who your teachers are. In addition, the school will provide a directory of every teacher and his or her location. In the event that your parent or guardian cannot make the session, they can always contact the school to make an appointment with your teachers.
