Faculty and students at Harry S Truman High School have much to be proud of in light of the results of the recent NYC DOE Quality Review.

On Friday, March 14, 2008, reviewers announced that Truman High School is “well developed” in all of the five categories reviewed by the assessment. In addition to being an increase from just a year ago when Truman was deemed proficient with well developed features, this is the highest possible rating that this review renders. The increase in rating is due to the collaborative efforts of faculty, students, parents, and the fierce leadership of Principal Sana Q. Nasser.

The Quality Review is a process by which reviewers from Cambridge University, United Kingdom, come to evaluate each public school in New York City. Over a period of three days, reviewers observe all aspects of the educational process at the school. In addition to the time spent observing lessons in the classroom, they conduct interviews with teachers, students, and parents.

Following the three day process, reviewers make a judgment on how the school is doing in each of five categories. A school may be deemed underdeveloped, proficient, or well developed.

In addition to Truman’s strong academic and growing student programs, statistical data reveals Truman’s high graduation rate (higher than the NYC average), competitive academic achievements, and an increasingly safe and nurturing school environment.

While student achievement at Truman is on the rise, Principal Sana Q. Nasser is committed to ensuring even more success for Truman students in the future. An example of this commitment is the recent expansion of enrichment programs including an increase in the number of both 9th grade Honors classes and Advanced Placement classes.

The Harry S Truman school community is dedicated to continued progress and to providing their teachers and administration with the professional development necessary to facilitate that improvement. Truman’s faculty and staff are encouraged by the recent results of the Quality Review and the students’ daily success.

Long-time PENCIL [coordinator of the NYC Principal for a Day program] partner Paul Neuman, President and Founder of the catering company Neuman’s, recently organized a full-day field trip with Principal Sana Nasser of the Bronx’s Truman High School for students in the culinary arts program. The first stop on the itinerary was the French Culinary Institute, where students participated in a cooking demonstration. They then took tours of Dean & Deluca and Mr. Neuman’s own company. Mr. Neuman shared job-searching and resume tips, and introduced them to the Dean of Admissions at the French Culinary Institute. The field trip is part of the partners’ broader goal to develop the school’s culinary arts program and provide mentors to students.

Truman will be hosting workshops and practice robotics competitions for teams around the city on March 15th, 9Am t0 2Pm. These teams will be participating in the FTC robotics event at the Javitts Center on April 5, 2008. This is the inaugural event for this level of competition and is sponsored by FIRST.

FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science Technology, is a not-for-profit organization that sponsors the FIRST Lego League and the FIRST Robotics Competition. This year FIRST has sponsored a new event in NYC, the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), a mid-level robotics competition for high-school students. It offers the traditional challenge of a FIRST competition but with a more accessible and affordable robotics kit.

Truman’s Robotics Team will participate in FTC in April. The group has formed two separate teams, the GIGABOTS (our newbies) and the BOTZILLAS (our “varsity” group).

During the first marking period, Ms. De Los Santos’ Spanish Native Language Arts class read “Adolfo Miller”, an intriguing short story that forces the reader to truly think. It allows the reader to come up with his or her own ending for the story. The story is about a man named Adolfo Miller who gains the respect and trust of another family who takes care of him for years, only to steal from them in the end…or did he?

Students were asked to write an essay in which they analyzed the story and determined for themselves whether or not Adolfo Miller was guilty. After writing these essays, the class decided to act out Adolfo Miller’s trial. Each student in the class had a role in the trial by pretending to be characters from the story.

Students and teachers from other classes attended the trial, held in our own Truman High Court Room. Many of these students and teachers acted as members of the jury, because they had never read the book. They were able to listen and analyze the trial providing an unbiased verdict based solely on what they heard at the trial. The jury found Adolfo Miller innocent. The judge upheld this ruling but sentenced him to do service for the government for five years. See the class in action by viewing the photos in our gallery.

MSgt Antonelli writes in an email sent to the staff, ”we have placed a box for each in the general office. Bring in those used cartridges you normally just toss in the trash and toss them in our box. We are also accepting old, damaged cell phones.”

You may also donate laser printer cartridges.

Once the box is full, it will be sent to the recycling company. All monies collected from the this fundraiser will go help pay for Drill Competition fees and Insignia for cadets uniforms.
