Dear Staff Members:
There are many wonderful things that have been going on for the past 2 to 3 weeks. Some of the highlights are:
1) Ms. LaBua and her students went on their field trip to Washington, D.C. last weekend. The trip was a great success. It is not easy for a first year teacher to take on such an event, but with support of the Truman staff and Ms. LaBua’s dedication to our students, the trip was a memorable one for them.

Dear Staff Members:
1. Erika Miller asked for an e-mail to be sent to all staff requesting that we wear the brown sweatshirts that were purchased recently. it will be a show of great support for all of us to wear our hoodies today.
2. The Irish basketball team had a great time visiting our school. Both games on Tuesday and Thursday were fantastic to watch. We won both games, but the experience our students had is much more valuable than winning. Both of our chefs and the culinary arts students made dinner for the visitors and for our students and staff. Everyone enjoyed what was served and the students did a great job serving food under the direction of our new Chef Jeff.
3. I understand that many of you have returned completed parent surveys. I know you are trying your best and I thank you for continuing this consistent effort.
4. Ms. Neverson has been nominated by the NAACP and NCNW as the African-American Educator of the Year. The event will take place on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 8:00 AM at Maestro’s Caterers, 1703 Bronxdale Avenue, Bronx, NY. As soon as more details are received, we will pass them on to our staff.
5. Congratulations to Ms. Leyti De Los Santos who has been nominated as Outstanding Educator of the Year 2008 by Education Update. This organization has been honoring outstanding educators in New York City public schools for the past five years. The ceremony will be held at the Harvard Club in New York City in June 2008.
6. Please congratulate the following people when you see them for their tremendous help in making sure our visiting basketball team’s trip to our city and our school was a memorable one: Mr. Burke, Mr. Furriel, Mr. Barakat, Mr. Leddy, Ms. Alfano, Mr. Desantis, Mr. Carmichael, Ms. Podlas, Chef Chase and Chef Jeff, Ms. Mills, Mr. Virola, and of course the entire girls’ basketball team. If I neglected to mention anyone who played a critical part in making this event a good one for our school and St. Mary’s school, please forgive me.

Dear Staff Members,
I know many of you saw a crew from HBO filming all day on Thursday. Truman High School was one of the three schools selected for this taping to be featured at the PENCIL Foundation Gala that will take place on April 15th. The purpose of this is to highlight an example of partnership between the private sector and public schools. I will be attending this gala on April 15th and I will report back to you on the segment.
This Tuesday and Thursday an Irish Basketball Team will be visiting Truman High School through Coach Burke’s invitation. The games on both days will begin at 4:00 PM. It will be great if your schedule permits to attend these games and show our support for our athletes and Coach Burke.
This week the parent survey will be given to you during 3rd period class. Please read the directions carefully. These surveys affect our progress report and it is very important to have as many of our parents participating as possible. In the next couple of weeks, the student survey will be given to you as well and again, I ask you to have as many of your students complete the survey as possible.
As you know, the Department of Education is mandating that we administer the Acuity Assessment to a specific targeted population. This assessment will take place in April and as we get closer to the date you will be receiving e-mails detailing the specifics.
I hope you all had a nice Easter!
Sana Nasser
