Honors Engineering Program

In September 2005, Truman High School started a four-year Pre-Engineering Program that utilizes state-of-the-art computer equipment and software. All courses are taught by certified engineers trained at Rochester Institute of Technology through Project Lead the Way. We use project-based, hands-on experience to teach students the key elements and skills of engineering and technology-based careers. The courses include the following:

  • Introduction to Engineering Design
  • Principles of Engineering
  • Digital Electronics
  • Civil Engineering and Architecture

The Pre-Engineering Program offers the following benefits whereby students:
participate in hands-on, team-oriented activities

  • have the opportunity to enroll in courses that cover essential topics in technology.
  • take courses that will apply and reinforce their study of math and science.
  • enjoy a challenging program that incorporates and addresses the goal of raising standards of learning
  • participate in a program that will allow them to explore a major career path and will prepare them for further education at a four year college in the field of engineering
  • have an opportunity to gain real world experience through internships with a local industry during the summer
  • have the opportunity to earn college credit

The Robotics Program was designed to inspire students to explore science and technology. The students will develop an understanding of the systems that make up robots and how robots are used to assist us in accomplishing tasks. Through the design, construction, and programming of several robots using the VEX Robotic System, the students will learn about the engineering process, project management, communications, and teamwork. Students will become better problem solvers and gain valuable insights on how mathematics and science play a significant role when solving robotics problems.
