BRONX, NY – On Tuesday, June 3, 2025, over 250 students transformed the 2nd floor atrium of Harry S. Truman High School into a vibrant gallery of creativity and emotion during the school’s annual Art Show. Featuring an impressive range of work—painting, drawing, ceramics, poetry, graphic design, digital artwork, and digital photography—the show stood as a powerful testament to student talent and the emotional depth that art can express.
Throughout the day, visitors enjoyed not only the displayed work but also live paint demonstrations, giving guests an opportunity to witness the artistic process in real time. The event created an immersive and dynamic environment that celebrated both finished pieces and works-in-progress.
Parents, staff, and community members were invited to the evening reception from 6–8 PM, which included appetizers catered by Truman’s Culinary Department and the chance to view student work while mingling with artists and supporters.
Art teacher and show organizer Ms. Mills reflected on the experience, saying, “It’s very empowering. I’m so proud—exhausted, but proud. It’s incredible to see how far students grow, from what they first created in Studio Art to what they can do now in AP. It really shows their hard work.”
She also spoke about the deeper impact of the show: “A lot of our students struggle with anxiety, and art becomes a way for them to manage it and express themselves. When other students see those pieces, they connect with them—it becomes a shared experience.”
The lingering effects of the pandemic were still visible in the themes of many student pieces. Ms. Mills noted that even five years later, “you can still see COVID and anxiety woven into a lot of the artwork. It’s raw, it’s real—and it’s something students are still processing.”
From expressive self-portraits to powerful poetry and live creative energy, the Truman Art Show was more than a display—it was a collective statement of voice, growth, and the healing power of creativity.
