Truman Culinary Senior Carlos Lopez Wins Record-Breaking $45,000 CCAP Scholarship

BRONX, NY – Harry S Truman High School is proud to announce that senior culinary student Carlos Lopez has been awarded the largest cash scholarship offered by the Careers through the Culinary Arts Program (CCAP). Lopez was one of only 15 finalists selected from culinary programs across New York City to compete in the prestigious event, which requires rigorous training and technical precision.

During the final round of competition, Lopez was tasked with preparing a complex multi-course meal. His winning menu included a chicken entrée with hunter sauce and olive oil mashed potatoes, followed by a dessert of crêpes with pastry cream, chocolate sauce, and strawberries. His performance was so exemplary that it caught the attention of celebrity chef and former CCAP winner Cesar Gutierrez.

In a remarkable gesture of support, Chef Gutierrez created a $45,000 scholarship specifically for Lopez. The funds will be applied toward his future education at the New York City College of Technology—the same institution attended by Truman’s own Executive Chef Jeffrey Brylski. In addition to the financial award, Chef Gutierrez has committed to acting as a mentor for Lopez as he begins his professional journey.

Beyond his success in the CCAP competition, Lopez is already making a name for himself in the New York City restaurant scene. He currently serves as a line cook at Le Tête d’Or in Midtown, working under the mentorship of the legendary Daniel Boulud. Chef Boulud, one of the most Michelin-starred chefs in the world, took Lopez on as a mentee thanks to the school’s ongoing relationship with the CCAP program.

“Carlos has proven that hard work equals success,” said Chef Brylski. The Truman community congratulates Carlos on this monumental achievement and looks forward to seeing his continued success in the culinary industry.
