Librarian Ms. Devora Recognized by NYCSLA

BRONX, NY – Truman Librarian Elizabeth Devora was recognized as the March 2024 Spotlight by the New York City School Librarian’s Association for her hard work and dedication to improving our students’ library experience.  The NYCSLA wrote in an email:

On behalf of the New York City School Librarians’ Association (NYCSLA), we would like to inform you that your school librarian, Elizabeth Devora has been recognized as the Spotlight Librarian for March 2024.

Elizabeth‘s dedication to making your library a welcoming and inclusive space for your students has not gone unnoticed.

The New York City School Librarians’ Association understands the importance of having an exemplary library program run by a school librarian, and Elizabeth is a model for all of us in New York City.

Congratulations on having a leading library program and a highly effective school librarian!

The NYCSLA released a congratulatory poster summarizing some of the accomplishments that Ms. Devora has made.  It reads:

Elizabeth Devora is the School Librarian at Harry S Truman High School Campus in the Bronx.

She worked at The New York Public Library for over 20 years; she has been in Truman for 2.5 years. In her time at Truman, she revamped the library from furniture, to paint, and books. In 2022, students advocated for a library club, which then later became the Library Advisory Board. The library provides a space for students to come after school to engage in various activities in collaboration with NYPL, to study, read a book, or socialize with friends. The library also provides the DMV learner’s permit exam for students. One of Elizabeth’s most remarkable achievements is her initiative in bringing authors to the school. Recognizing the profound impact that meeting a real-life author can have on students, she has organized numerous author visits, enriching the curriculum and providing students with unforgettable experiences.

These visits not only ignite a passion for reading but also offer students valuable insights into the writing process, creativity, and the power of storytelling. Elizabeth collaborates with teachers and staff throughout the school building. Whether it’s designing research projects or curating booklists tailored to classroom themes, she is always ready to support educators in their quest to inspire and educate the students. Elizabeth is grateful for the support and help of her Principal, administration, teachers, and staff. This teamwork allows the library to be a space that provides for the academic and personal needs of the students.

We salute you, Ms. Devora!
